JEREMIE Frimpong has capped off a memorable first season at Celtic by winning the club’s Young Player of the Year Award, as voted for by the supporters.

The Award, sponsored by Scottish Centre for Excellence in Dentistry & PWR Pack Ltd, saw the Dutch teenager nominated alongside Mikey Johnston, Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer. And after voting closed, it was Frimpong who topped the poll.

The defender, who only turned 19 in December, signed from Manchester City on a four-year deal at the start of September last year, and speaking to the official Celtic website at the time, he said: “It feels amazing to have joined Celtic. What a massive club to be part of! I’m just lucky to have been picked and I’m grateful for everything. I’m just happy to be here and I just want to get on the pitch and show the fans everything that I’ve got.

“I’m looking forward to start training with my new team-mates and getting to know them. They’ve got more experience than me, so I’m hoping they’ll be able to help me as a player.”

Neil Lennon gave Frimpong his Celtic debut on September 25 in a League Cup tie at home to Partick Thistle, with the young defender playing 80 minutes of the 5-0 win.

And speaking after that match, the Celtic manager said: “I thought Jeremie was very good, very infectious. What you saw is what we’re seeing in training. He took the opportunity to play tonight off the back of Moritz being out. I thought he was excellent. He can be delighted with his night’s work and it’s a good start.

“Frimpong is battling for a first-team place. As soon as we brought him in, he’s excelled. For a guy with a small stature he has lot of personality, energy and strength. We feel he could be a really good player here.”

Jeremie Frimpong quickly established himself as part of the Celtic first-team squad, and over the course of the 2019/20 campaign, he made 19 appearances and scored two goals – against Aberdeen at Pittodrie in a 4-0 win and against Hibernian at home in a 2-0 victory.

He also picked up a League Cup winner’s medal, in an eventful game at Hampden where he also received a red card, while he is now also a Premiership winner, part of the Celtic squad that secured the club’s ninth title in a row. And if that’s not enough, he also has his own catchphrase!

And now, the Celtic supporters have chosen him as their Young Player of the Year. Oh my days, indeed!

Due to current circumstances, Celtic’s 2020 Awards Dinner was postponed in April. However, we still plan to have a fantastic celebration event to honour this years winners, with those supporters’ tickets already purchased being valid for this re-scheduled event.
