It was a disappointing afternoon at Ibrox for Celtic as the Scottish Cup holders lost 2-0 to their city rivals. Both goals came in the first-half, and though the Hoops created numerous chances, including a penalty with 10 minutes remaining, they were unable to convert any of them.

After a cagey start to the game, it was the home side who took the lead on 10 minutes. Joe Aribo drove down the right before cutting inside, and his deflected shot spun into the path of Steve Davis, who scored with an overhead kick from six-yards out.

While the goal gave Rangers a boost, Celtic began to work their way into the game and there were chances in quick succession for Odsonne Edouard, Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor. The Hoops came close again on 23 minutes, but Stephen Welsh was unable to steer a ball into the box on target, while Kris Ajer’s effort on the rebound was scrambled clear.

On 34 minutes, it was Rangers who scored to double their lead. Again, it was a chance created down their right-hand side and a low cross into the near post came off Jonjoe Kenny and into Scott Bain’s net. It was a bitter blow to John Kennedy’s side, who had looked the more likely side to get a goal at that stage in the game.

Diego Laxalt was replaced by Greg Taylor at half-time, and the Hoops had a chance within 20 seconds of the restart. David Turnbull latched on to the ball and fired a shot on target from 25 yards out, but Allan McGregor pushed the ball wide for a corner.

Just before the hour mark, Celtic created two chances in quick succession. First, Moi Elyounoussi latched on to a ball over the top and drove into the area, twisting and turning to create an opening. His effort was saved by McGregor, with the rebound spinning up to Edouard, whose effort was wide of the target.

Two minutes later, it was the French striker who set up Elyounoussi after capitalising on a slack back-pass from Nathan Patterson, but the Norwegian’s first touch took the ball away from him and allowed the goalkeeper to push the ball away.

At the other end, Scott Bain produced a double save to deny Ryan Kent and then Alfredo Morelos.

With 11 minutes to go, Celtic were given a lifeline when Leigh Griffiths was pushed inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Edouard stepped up, but his spot-kick was saved by McGregor. It was to be the last clear chance for the Hoops on a day of derby disappointment at Ibrox.
