Tom Rogic’s goal in the second minute of added time at the end of the first-half was enough to give Celtic a 1-0 win and all three points against Motherwell.

It was a hard-fought game, though one that Ange Postecoglou’s side deserved to win, having created plenty of chances throughout the 90 minutes.

As early as the third minute, the Hoops could have taken the lead after Callum McGregor and James Forrest combined on the edge of the area, with the Celtic captain threading a ball through for Forrest. But his effort from six yards out went just wide of the post.

Celtic continued to push forward, and Rogic had an effort blocked before Josip Juranovic’s shot on 12 minutes was deflected wide for a corner.

However, just a minute later, Motherwell came close when Callum Slattery’s left-foot shot from the edge of the area hit Joe Hart’s bar.

Celtic suffered another injury blow on 15 minutes when James Forrest was forced to come off, with Mikey Johnston replacing him

Joe Hart was called into action 10 minutes later, producing a world-class save to stop a deflected shot from going on before bravely throwing himself on the ball to block two onrushing Motherwell forwards.

Johnston created his own opportunity on 32 minutes when he cut in from the left flank, skipping past two defenders and firing in a low shot which hit the side-netting and went wide.

David Turnbull, leading the line in the absence of some injured forward, had a great chance with six minutes of the half remaining. This time it was Liam Kelly in the Motherwell goal who produced a superb save to push Turnbull’s deflected shot over the bar.

With the first-half in added time, Celtic won a free-kick on the left-hand side of the Motherwell area. Turnbull rolled the ball across the packed area into the path of Rogic, who had peeled off his marker, and the Australian fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net to give the Hoops a 1-0 half-time lead.
