Two Celtic loanees faced off in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend, though only one of them emerged triumphant at the final whistle.

Seven out of the 12 players currently out on loan at the club were in action, with one still to play later on this evening.

Following the conclusion of the first international break of 2023, they would have been looking to make a strong return the regular club schedule at their temporary sides.

For the first time this season, Adam Montgomery came up against his former loan side in Aberdeen and fellow Celtic loanee, Liam Scales.

Both players have enjoyed regular minutes at their respective Scottish Premiership clubs this season, and battled it out against one another at the weekend.

The versatile duo started and played the entire 90 minutes as part of the two defensive backlines, who were looking to secure all three points at the business end of the season.

Scales was the one to come out on top in the match-up between the Celtic loanees as Aberdeen defeated 10-man St Johnstone 1-0 at McDiarmid Park.

Johnny Kenny helped Shamrock Rovers pick up their first league victory of the season at the seventh attempt, defeating Dundalk 4-0 on Friday evening.

It has been an unusually slow start to proceedings for the current holders of the League of Ireland Premier Division, failing to win their first six games, drawing five and losing one. However, they finally got off the mark and Kenny was on hand to score one of the four goals.

Fresh off the back of scoring for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s during the international break, the on-loan striker notched his third goal of the season, turning home a cross into the box with his head.

Kenny and his Shamrock Rovers team-mates will now look to build upon that result, starting with a Dublin derby match against Bohemians next week.

It was a successful international break for Mikey Johnston, who made his debut for Ireland in a friendly match against Latvia.

The winger has since returned to club action, and would have been looking to build upon the momentum gained whilst away on senior international duty for the first time.

Unfortunately for the Celtic man, though, he couldn’t make an impact off the bench for Vitoria de Guimaraes, as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Pacos Ferreira, who currently sit in the relegation zone.

After coming on early in the second half, Johnston had a positive impact on the game, looking to find the all-important winner.

He completed three dribbles, but ultimately couldn’t break down the stubborn backline and the European hopefuls were held to a point.
