More than 20 years on from making his debut as a young goalkeeper for Shrewsbury Town, Joe Hart decided that last season would be his final campaign as a professional footballer.

The Englishman announced in February that he would be retiring from the game at the end of the 2023/24 term, and it was a campaign which ended in more glory for Hart and for Celtic.

When the experienced goalkeeper joined Celtic three years ago, it was off the back of a difficult few years which had involved some unsuccessful loan spells at various clubs.

That followed a successful period at Manchester City, during which time he won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups.

He also gained 75 caps for England, and was their No.1 at a number of European Championship and World Cup tournaments.

Despite that impressive CV, Hart’s career, by his own admission, began to stall a little, but an offer to move to Celtic in August 2021 proved to be a golden opportunity and one which delivered more success and silverware for the former England keeper, winning a domestic Treble, three league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups with the Hoops.

Looking back on last season, his final campaign in professional football which ended with a league and Scottish Cup double, the Englishman says that working with Brendan Rodgers has been a positive experience.

“He’s been a joy to work with,” Joe Hart told the Celtic View. “I’ve known him professionally through the years, playing against his teams, and he’s always been very personable.

'I think as a coach and as a manager he’s been exceptional. He really understood me, and I’ve enjoyed playing under him.'

“I’m just really proud to be part of a fantastic team that’s been pushed to the limit and we’ve come out on top, which is a great feeling.

“Football’s a special place and you find a lot of special people, and I feel really privileged to be a part of it.

“To feel welcomed, to feel loved and for my family to feel embraced – we’ve just felt everything that this club has to offer and it’s truly special.

“You’ve got to work hard to get that because it’s not a stupid place, it doesn’t just give things out easily, but it recognises people who are willing to put themselves on the line, wear this badge with pride and honour, and try their best to represent it.”
