Danish international goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, joined Celtic in July 2024 on a one-year deal, having played the previous season in Belgium with Anderlecht.
An impressive performer at both club and international level, he is still the Denmark national side’s No. 1, while he has garnered a vast amount of experience over the past 18 years.
His professional career began with Manchester City and he made the first of 10 appearances for the club back in August 2007 when he kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win away to West Ham United. He then followed that up with two more clean sheets – against Derby County and then Manchester United.
By that point, he had already enjoyed loan spells with Darlington, Bury and Falkirk. He played a total of 17 games with the Scottish club, including one match against Celtic when he saved a Craig Beattie penalty to give Falkirk a 1-0 win over the Hoops.
Further loan spells at Cardiff City and Coventry City followed before he signed for Notts County in 2009, helping them to win the English League Two title.
After that successful season, he joined Leeds United for a year before signing for Leicester City in 2011, where he would enjoy the longest and most successful period to date of his career.
He was part of Leicester City’s fairytale Premier League triumph in the 2015/16 season, making a total of 40 appearances for the club across all competitions as they upset the odds to become the champions of England.
Kasper was still Leicester City’s No. 1 when Brendan Rodgers arrived in February 2018, and he played his part in another historic achievement for the club when they won the FA Cup for the first time in 2021, beating Chelsea in the final when he kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.
And for good measure, he helped Leicester lift the FA Community Shield at the start of the following season when they beat Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley.
After 11 years and 489 appearances for the club, he left in 2022 to join French side, Nice, where he played for just over a year before moving to Belgium for a season with Anderlecht.
At Celtic, the keeper was reunited with Brendan Rodgers, determined to deliver further success to Paradise.
COUNTRY BHOY
On his arrival at Paradise, Kasper Schmeichel had already amassed 105 caps for Denmark after making his debut in a friendly match against Macedonia in February 2013. He captained his country in their four games at the 2024 European Championship and is closing in on his father’s impressive cap haul, with Peter Schmeichel gaining a total of 129 caps for Denmark.
